Glassdome Announces Partnership with Siemens SiGREEN and Proof of Concept with LG Electronics Vehicle Solution
By John WrightGlassdome and Siemens are partnering to help manufacturers handle ever-growing carbon compliance and reporting requirements in Europe. This new solution combines the ISO 14067-verified data acquisition and calculation capabilities of the Glassdome Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) solution and the data exchange and Catena-X expertise of Siemens SiGREEN.
The partnership will be showcased in a proof of concept with LG Electronics Vehicle Solution to show how the combined offering can assess and report on even the most complex supply chains.
Automotive Focus
The initial focus of the Glassdome and Siemens SiGREEN partnership will be on the automotive industry. Regulation and consumer demands are growing stricter, forcing OEMs to respond and future-proof against initiatives like the EU Battery Directive and Digital Product Passport.
In response, automakers like Stellantis are setting ambitious net zero emissions targets and using their market power to demand that their suppliers calculate their product carbon footprints.
For Tier One suppliers with stockpiles of cash and sustainability expertise, determining their gate-to-gate emissions is a matter of reallocating investment. But that’s not all that an accurate PCF demands.
Automotive supply chains are composed of interconnected tiers, from miners to steelmakers to nuts and bolts producers to recyclers, and each one needs to calculate and share their PCF to get an accurate end result.
The sheer organization alone is daunting. And that’s before other hurdles come in.
Many suppliers are nervous about revealing input and process information that could be used against them in a pricing negotiation. Small factories and materials producers might not have the resources to hire the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) specialists or consulting firms who were historically the only option to calculate their PCF. That leaves busy operations professionals stuck with long, confusing spreadsheets to accurately complete under pain of losing their biggest customers.
The Glassdome + Siemens Partnership
Glassdome and SiGREEN excel at solving two sides of that problem.
Glassdome’s ISO 14067-verified solution uses expert consultants, proprietary technology and machine-level sensors to automate data collection and streamline calculation and reporting. That delivers monthly reporting at a significantly lower price point than traditional consulting firms, who usually only deliver a report once every three years.
SiGREEN is a world leader in PCF management, the logistics of sharing PCF values across the supply chain.
Thanks to SiGREEN’s capabilities, manufacturers using the Glassdome platform will be able to incorporate their supplier’s PCFs, calculate their own, and share it with their customers using Catena-X and other data-sharing ecosystems.
To celebrate this natural symbiosis, Siemens and Glassdome hosted an event on December 9th. Attendees included LG Electronics, BMW, Catena-X, and representatives of German and South Korean government agencies (including the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and the Korea Smart Manufacturing Office (KOSMO)), and industry association representatives from LNI 4.0 and International Manufacturing-X.
The LG Electronics Pilot Project
The benefits of the Glassdome and SiGREEN partnership will be on full display in our initial proof of concept pilot project with LG Electronics.
We will demonstrate how a Tier One supplier like LG Electronics can request and receive supplier PCFs using Catena-X standard data through the SiGREEN API and calculate their own using Glassdome.
LG Electronics can then share their PCF with an OEM, all through the same SiGREEN API.
Through this pilot, we’ll show how the partnership will help any automotive manufacturer and supplier who needs to manage and report supply chain and product-level carbon emissions.
Future Projects and Plans
The proof of concept is just the beginning.
Right now, users need to navigate back and forth between Glassdome and SiGREEN to request, calculate, and receive PCFs. In the future, the data exchange functionality will be integrated into the Glassdome platform, creating a seamless experience powered by Siemens SiGREEN.
