JRC Releases Updated PCF Guidelines for Industrial Batteries (April 2025)

Summary of the JRC Announcement – April 11, 2025

On April 11, 2025, the Joint Research Centre (JRC) under the European Commission released an updated methodology for calculating the Carbon Footprint of Batteries (CFB), in accordance with Article 7 of the Batteries Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2023/1542).
This update specifically applies to:
- Rechargeable industrial batteries over 2kWh,
- Light Means of Transport (LMT) batteries, and
- Electric Vehicle (EV) batteries.
Under this regulation, manufacturers are required to report Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) values when placing these batteries on the EU market.
According to an internal review by the Glassdome Consulting Team, this document does not significantly differ from the previously published methodology for EV batteries (CFB-EV) and provides a sufficiently detailed technical basis for implementation.
Although it is not yet finalized as a delegated act, the level of detail suggests that formal adoption may follow in the near future.
